Providing two eSATA ports the adapter card offers a cost-effective solution for connecting hot-pluggable, high-speed storage, and in turn allows for easier data backups and archiving. With full support for SATA 300 (SATA II) hard drives and data transfer speeds of up to 3 Gbps, the adapter card features a native PCI Express single chipset that provides enhanced compatibility, reliability and performance for external SATA storage needs. I installed this on my Dell Studio XPS 9000 running Windows 7 (64 bit). The card is now working perfectly, but the documentation is outdated and extremely poor. See update below for significant limitation. The instruction Manual and "Multiple Controllers Driver CD" that came with it made the installation unnecessarily difficult. If you are expecting to find a setup.exe file on the CD, you are in for a disappointment - just a few dozen files for every product they make. If you go online and download the latest driver as I did, you will find the Windows 7 instructions equally lacking and the 64 bit driver for Intel processors hidden in the AMD folder! While there is no Customer Support phone number in the documentation, the Technical Support rep who answered my email provided a number and was extremely helpful in guiding me through the installation. However, while doing throughput tests I noticed that file transfers weren't going any faster than our old configuration, which was USB 2.0 to SCSI Ultra320.After a lot of research, I discovered that this card is only compliant with PCI Express 1.1, which at 250MB/s is half the speed of PCI Express 2.0. Furthermore, because this card is PCIe x1 (one transfer lane), with 2 devices connected it was cutting the throughput speed in half again. And because PCIe 1.1 has about 20% overhead, my effective transfer speed was < 100MB/s, not much better than USB 2.0's 60MB/s. So I'm returning this card and ordering a newer StarTech.com card which is PCIe 2.0 compliant.
